What are FabLabs?
FabLabs are located all over the world and enable everyone who is interested access to modern equipment and methods of innovation. In this way, workshops or laboratories provide space for meeting other people who want to discover and create. If you are interested, read the article on wiki or view the source at FabFoundation.org.
How does it work?
In general, there are two types of FabLabs. In the one, you pay for the time on the machines. In the other, there is a system of small financial fees. We prefer the second type. You pay a fee according to your form of membership. You do not need to book in advance, just check on our website if the machine is free and simply pop in. If needs be, you can book a machine for a particular time for a small fee.
What facilities are there?
An electro workshop, mechanical workshop, and a main room with a very wide range of equipment. Take a look at the list of equipment here.
Where are we located?
On the 4th floor of the JIC INMEC building. It is situated in the Technological Park, Purkyňova 127, Brno.
Who makes use of the facilities?
Students, craftsmen and enthusiasts. Simply put, anyone and everyone who indulges in creating and who wants to try out something new. Members of the FabLab community help each other to choose the right equipment or to set the machines and programmes. With an eye to the future, we also look forward to community members participating in events such as project showcases, and are glad to hear any suggestions from them with regards to further investments in equipment.
How much does it cost?
As an apprentice you pay an admission fee of CZK 100 and are welcome any time during opening hours (Monday: 12.00 pm – 6.00 pm, Wednesday: 8.00 pm – 11.00 pm, and Friday: 8.00 am – 11.00 am). As a craftsman the admission fee rises to CZK 400, but FabLab is open to you for 24 hours. Masters pay CZK 700 per month and in return can spend unlimited time at FabLab.
I'm a freshman. Is it difficult to create something?
You must go through training before you can use the machines. Once you have completed your training, assistants will be on hand to help during opening hours. The important thing is to give yourself time. Using the 3D printer is relatively easy. However, the laser cutting machine requires more skills and is not something that can be mastered in half an hour. The longest training is for the CNC router and electro workshop.
I have my project in .XYZ format. How can I find out if it is compatible with the CNC router/cutting machine or printer?
You can find the relevant information on our wiki page.
What if I break something?
We are insured. If you use the machine in line with the instructions and something happens, there is nothing to worry about. If you did not read the instructions and did not use the machine appropriately, the costs must be covered by you. However, we assume and believe that all community members will handle the machines with care.
Who pays for it?
The South Moravian Region provided the initial investment of approximately CZK 5 million. In several years´ time, FabLab should be self-funding.
Where do I find materials?
If the material is in the list of permitted materials, you can bring your own. Otherwise, you can buy materials at our eshop and pick them up during opening hours.
Are there any other FabLabs in the Czech Republic?
So far, we are the only FabLab in the Czech Republic and the only one that meets the Fab Foundation regulations. However, there are other cooperating workshops in Brno. On the street Čápkova there is the hackerspace Base48, on Industra you can find the Industralab makerspace, and a new workshop focused on wood is currently being constructed at the Hobbylab.
Where in the world are the other FabLabs?
There are FabLabs located from Canada to Bangladesh, from Cape Town to Norway. There are already over 1,000 of them. Click on overview to find out where.
